Botox
Although Botox is most commonly used to smooth wrinkles around the eyes, the forehead and around the lips, it is also used as an adjunctive treatment in patients with TMD (jaw joint disorders). It can greatly reduce the intensity of the muscle contractions that contribute to teeth grinding, TMD and facial pain. Botox can be used to diminish the look of a gummy smile, a much less invasive option than oral surgery. It can also be useful in helping patients adjust to their new dentures.
Botox is a natural purified protein that when injected, blocks the communication between a motor nerve and the muscle it stimulates, thus causing the muscle to relax. It does not cause loss of sensation in the muscle. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles and creates a smoother and improved appearance.
